Near 70% of Chinese automakers fall short of 2023 sales targets. In 2023, only four out of 13 Chinese automakers met their sales targets in a highly competitive market. Li Auto exceeded its goal by 25%, delivering 376,030 vehicles. BYD achieved its ambitious target of 3 million sales, overtaking Tesla as the world's leading EV maker. Geely, a traditional automaker, met its target, but its EV brand Zeekr fell short. Nio, Xpeng, and Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology missed their targets for the second year, leading to executive changes and workforce reductions at Nio. Despite these, overall sales of electric and hybrid vehicles in China rose by 38%, totaling 8.88 million units.
